Why Is God Silent When I Need Him Most?
When God is silent, it doesn’t mean He has abandoned us or is indifferent to our struggles. Often, it’s during these silent phases that He is working behind the scenes in our lives, shaping us, and preparing us for what’s next.
Some of the reasons why God can be silent include
- God is Teaching Patience and Perseverance (James 1:2-4): Sometimes, God remains silent to build our patience and perseverance. According to the book of James, trials produce steadfastness, and when its work is complete, we emerge mature and complete.
- God is Testing Faith (1 Peter 1:6-7): The apostle Peter tells us that we may have to suffer various trials so that our faith, which is infinitely more precious than perishable gold, can be tested and proven genuine.
- God is Leading Us to Repentance (Isaiah 59:2): According to Isaiah, God might become silent because of our iniquities. Our sins can create a separation between us and Him, making it seem like He’s gone silent. The silence ends when we repent and return to righteousness.
- God is Preparing Something For Us (Jer. 29:11): One thing you should know is that God may be preparing something for you when he’s silent. While you may be brooding because of the current situation of things, you should know that He’s working behind the scenes.
- God is Waiting for the Right Time (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8): Ecclesiastes reminds us that there’s a time for everything. Sometimes, God’s silence simply means that it’s not yet the right time for the answer or the blessing.
If God is Silent, Do This
Here are six things you can do when God is silent.
1. Offer Thanksgiving
Gratitude can be a powerful tool in times of divine silence. As Christians, offering thanks to God, even amid hardship, can have a transformative effect on our perspective and our spiritual well-being.
By focusing on our blessings, we can shift our viewpoint from what’s lacking to the abundance that’s already present in our lives. This mindset can instill peace, diminish anxiety, and promote contentment even in uncertain times.
Furthermore, gratitude can open our eyes to God’s subtle signs and reminders of His presence that we might otherwise overlook.
It enables us to acknowledge and appreciate the ways God continues to work in our lives, even when He seems silent. Embracing a spirit of thanksgiving can thus help us to maintain faith and patience during periods of divine silence, reassuring us of God’s constant love and presence.
2. Check yourself
Checking ourselves is yet another important thing to do God seems silent.
Isaiah 59:1-2 states, “Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you so that he will not hear.”
These verses suggest that our sins and iniquities can create a barrier between us and God, impeding our communication with Him. It implies that if we feel God is silent, we should reflect on our lives and see if there are any sins or wrongdoings that we need to repent.
Checking ourselves enables us to address these issues, seek forgiveness, and restore our relationship with God, thereby breaking the silence.
3. Understand That Silence Does Not Mean God Is Absent
Just because God is silent doesn’t mean He’s absent. In fact, the Bible is replete with instances where God was silent but was working behind the scenes. One of the most poignant examples is the story of Job.
Despite Job’s trials and tribulations, God was there, even in His silence (Job 23:8-10).
Another biblical reference is found in the story of Joseph. Though Joseph was sold into slavery and later unjustly imprisoned, God was with him through every ordeal, eventually elevating him to a position of power in Egypt (Genesis 39:21-23).
The story of Esther also reinforces this truth. Although God’s name is not mentioned in the Book of Esther, His presence and providence are evident throughout the narrative as He orchestrates events for the deliverance of His people.
In the New Testament, we see this in the life of Christ. On the cross, Jesus experienced the silence of God, crying out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46). Yet, God was not absent. The resurrection that followed was proof of God’s profound presence and power.
These stories remind us that in moments when God appears silent, He is often working behind the scenes, orchestrating events, and shaping us for His purposes.
4. Seek Comfort and Guidance in Scripture
When God seems silent, one powerful step to take is to immerse ourselves in the Bible.
The Bible is the living word of God, filled with promises, instructions, comfort, and stories of individuals who have been through similar experiences.
As Romans 15:4 says, “For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” Therefore, turning to the scripture during times of divine silence can help to realign our focus on God’s promises, remind us of His eternal faithfulness, and provide hope for the future.
5. Acknowledge That You May Never Receive the Answer You Desire
One of the most challenging aspects of divine silence is not knowing if or when we’ll receive an answer from God.
Sometimes, we may never receive the answer we desire, and that’s okay. We must remember that God sees the bigger picture and knows what’s best for us (Isaiah 55:8-9).
While it may be difficult to accept this truth, acknowledging it can bring peace and surrender to our hearts, helping us trust in God’s sovereignty even in moments of uncertainty.
6. Have unwavering faith
Lastly, during periods of divine silence, it’s essential to have unwavering faith in God. Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as “the confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
Silence can be a test of our faith, but it’s also an opportunity to deepen our trust in God and His plans for us. As we continue to believe in Him and remain faithful despite the silence, we are demonstrating that our trust is not rooted in answers or blessings but rather in God Himself.
When God is silent he is working: How true is this?
The assertion “When God is silent, He is working” holds profound truth within the Christian faith. It serves as a reminder of the omnipotence and omnipresence of God, implying that even in times of perceived silence, God is actively orchestrating events for the good of His people.
For example, the Israelites’ four hundred years of bondage in Egypt was a period of divine silence, yet God was working to raise Moses as a deliverer.
Similarly, during the intertestamental period (400 silent years between the Old Testament and the New Testament), God was preparing for the coming of Jesus Christ, the Messiah.
Therefore, while it can be challenging to hold onto faith during periods of divine silence, it’s critical to remember that silence does not equate to inactivity on God’s part.
His workings may not always be evident or align with our timing, but God is continuously at work, fulfilling His divine plan in our lives.
